John Murillo, on becoming a poet and Up Jump the Boogie

Our discussion of John Murillo’s Up Jump the Boogie is coming up soon — October 12 at New England College. Let me know if you have favorite poems from the book that you’d especially like to discuss. And in the meantime, enjoy a wonderful radio interview Rachelle Cruz did with Murillo on the The Blood-Jet Writing Hour back in 2010.

  1. What a great review! I did not know this poet and probably would have passed him by as heavy on jive and stereotype, and thin on surprise. Thanks for opening this book for me, and showing something else: “renegade” is a verb!

    • Thanks for commenting! It’s a terrific book, and I’m happy to help people find it. And, yes, even good old Merriam-Webster says that “renegade” is a verb, which I didn’t know before I read this book.
